Prism Labs is proud to announce the publication of a groundbreaking new study, Beyond Body Mass Index: Accurate Metabolic Disease-Risk Phenotyping With 3D Smartphone Application. This study validates the accuracy of our 3D smartphone scanning system for capturing body measurements and metabolic health risk assessment. Researchers conducted a rigorous methodology, comparing six key body circumference measurements from our system with manual measurements by trained anthropometrists, demonstrating high correlation and minimal error.

A Breakthrough in Digital Anthropometry

The study, led by Cassidy McCarthy, Grant M. Tinsley, Sophia Ramirez, and Steven B. Heymsfield, evaluated our cutting-edge 3D smartphone scanning system. The results were impressive:

  • High Correlation: Our app's measurements closely matched manual tape measurements, with correlation coefficients (R²) between 0.90 and 0.97.
  • Minimal Error: Mean absolute errors were low (1.5–3.4 cm), and root-mean-square errors (RMSE) remained within acceptable limits.
  • Accurate VAT Estimation: Waist circumference measurements captured with our app were strongly correlated with visceral adipose tissue (VAT), a key predictor of metabolic disease, as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
  • Comparable to or Better than Stationary 3D Scanners: Our smartphone app performed as well as, or better than, high-end stationary 3D body scanners used in research settings.

Implications for Health & Wellness

Our 3D scanning technology enables individuals and healthcare professionals to capture accurate body shape and fat distribution data using just a smartphone. The study highlights several key advantages of Prism Labs' technology:

  1. Beyond BMI: Our app provides more precise health risk assessments by incorporating WC and WC/HC measurements, which are better indicators of metabolic health than BMI alone.
  2. Accessible & Affordable: Unlike expensive DXA scans or specialized 3D body scanners, our smartphone-based technology makes high-precision body composition analysis available to anyone with a compatible device.
  3. Clinical & At-Home Use: Our tool can be widely adopted for monitoring health changes in clinical settings and by individuals tracking fitness and weight loss progress at home.
  4. Potential for Broader Applications: Beyond metabolic health, digital anthropometry could be used in pregnancy monitoring, cancer care, and other medical conditions where body shape changes matter.

Scaling Body Composition Analysis

This research signals a significant step forward in health tracking technology. By leveraging 3D scanning and AI-driven analysis, Prism Labs brings sophisticated body composition assessment out of the lab and into the hands of everyday users. As we move beyond BMI, digital anthropometry could redefine how we assess and manage health risks in the years to come.
